Design Proportions and Guidelines for Boiserie

Wainscoting or Chair rail divides a wall into

human scale divisions. Adding details makes

a space look larger (not smaller as commonly

  thought).

This wall decoration is known as Boiserie.

There are the natural proportions that one

should adhere to in laying out wainscoting

design, however like all design projects it is

also a matter of taste.   Nothing is more

offensive than seeing walls divided in half.

 1/3-2/3rds is the rule.

In the craftsman style the bottom is 2/3rds

while in a traditional style the bottom is 1/3rd

which is appropriate, but never in half.

Follow the guidelines of the "golden rule"

  of proportions.

What is the Golden Rule (PHi)

  PHi (1.618)

The Ancient Greeks around 300 BC realized that there was a ratio that

represented the natural proportions of both humans and art / architecture.

In simple terms, it is approximately a 1/3rd to 2/3rds ratio.

This calculation is handy in sizing Medallions, dividing walls with wainscoting

and Boiserie or dividing columns, cabinetry etc.

A Guideline as to how we succeeded

 1) Selecting the Mouldings

 2) Measuring & Planning

  For this you will need

  a spirit level

  a pencil

  and the moulding

you will apply to the wall.

Hint: Paint the wall prior to

  penciling the boxes

When  planning the boxes, divide them up into sections of 3 for a great look.

Remember to adhere to the rule of 3.

 3) Planning & Locating Electrical & Water Lines for your own safety

So that you do not pin into a live wire,

  always use a meter

  to detect electrical wires.

 4) Planning the Corners & Spaces Between the Panels

  Hint:

  Use the thickness of the

spirit level to be the measurement

between the boxes and the window

  casing and baseboard.

Most are about 2-1/2 inches in

  thickness.

 5) Use only the approved adhesive for ArchPolymerTM

  For any polyurethane mouldings

 you will require approved adhesive

so that the glue does not break down

 the high density polyurethane. Also

always paint with non oil paints.

 6) Use a Brad Nailer to affix the Mouldings

A brad nailer makes it very easy to

apply the panel molds and casing to

the wall.  Use the approved adhesive

as well to affix the mouldings.

 7) Bang Bang Bang - your getting there

 8) In Progress Looking Good !

  Pilasters add a wonderful

  element of accentuated height

  and border your wall creation.

Pilasters are flat columns and if

you add a corbel to the top it

 is called a console.

  Find Pilasters here

 9) Add More Details if you like

  One piece boiserie headers are

  available & Rosettes

 10) Now Fill the joins

This spackling compound is a mix of plaster

and polymers.  Apply it with your finger, and

sand it when it is dry.  Never use caulking

because it shrinks over time and cannot be sanded
